RE: Occupation >Music teacher (private) ASCO Code 2491-13, Assessing Authority : VETASSESS, Point of Skills 50
Skill Assessments by VETASSESS
Process of assessment and points awarded
If you intend to migrate to Australia under a skilled visa category you must complete a Skills Assessment with the relevant authority before lodging your visa application.
VETASSESS is one of these assessing authorities. VETASSESS is responsible for assessing a range of management, administrative, professional and associate professional occupations for the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA).
Many of the Skilled Migration Program visas are points tested. VETASSESS do not assess the higher points for Professional or Trade skills – their point awards are 40 or 50 points. (The exception to this is Aircraft Pilots, who are awarded 60 poins.) As a guide (only), 40 points are allocated to successful applicants in those occupations where there is low demand in Australia, or where the qualification is at Diploma level. Degree level qualifications are usually awarded 50 points.
VETASSESS is fast at completing the assessment. Most assessments are completed within six weeks. This compares with six weeks to three months for Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). On the other hand, VETASSESS do not have the difficult job of TRA, who require extensive documentation and entire work experience history in employer references or sworn Affidavits. All the positive assessments from TRA award 60 points for skill because there is a very high demand in Australia for trade skilled workers.
VETASSES require your qualification awards and your transcript of marks – no work experience documents required. There is also a list of identity documents, and all documents in the application must be correctly presented, and translated if necessary. See below the Skilled Occupations List of occupations for VETASSESS.
VETASSESS will provide you with a written assessment. If you receive a negative assessment, you can ask for review, and there is also an appeal process. Positive results should be forwarded to DIMIA with the visa application. Keep a copy of the assessment, but send the original to DIMIA.
Factors which are taken into account when the assessors make a decision on your application include:
- The standards maintained in the education system of your country;
- the standard of education in the institution where you studied; and
- the study courses you took, including the level, structure, length and content;
- in some cases, it may also depend on your standard of marks for the course.
The Skill Assessment will reflect the views of VETASSESS, based on the information and documents you provide. In some cases the VETASSESS staff will research your application on any of the dot points listed above.
Take note that VETASSESS, or any other assessor, or DIMIA, do not assess your chances of finding employment here. That is up to you, your suitability for your job, and the labour market in your area of Australia.
